 Big book with TONS of examplesOct 22, 2009
The title says it all. This is a BIG book with a TON of examples of different means of applying and using grids. The book also offers methods for going beyond the grid. That is really all I can say about this one.
Great book for students, you may find yourselves referencing this book again later down the road from time to time.

I would LOVE to provide an opinion. If I EVER GET THE PRODUCT. I don't understand what takes so long? I've ordered tires via the internet and get them faster than this. It's been over 4 weeks!
Less educational and useful than I wishedAug 17, 2009
I was disappointed with this book. As the other reviews mentioned, this book is divided into two sections; the first one discusses using grids and the second one is a "break the rules" section in regards to grid design and usage. Each section starts with an article and then spends many pages showing and discussing various examples. I found the first section's article too brief (and inadequate?) and the second one's article only helpful in giving historical perspective as to design trends.
I agree with the readability issues for this book. If the goal was making the essay sections easy to read then I think it falls short. More traditional layouts and use of typography (size, color, choice of fonts) might have helped this goal more than the very self-consciously designed layout.
I also would have liked to see more discussion of more mundane examples (magazines, books, etc) as it seemed most examples were for clients looking for a very highly designed / arty look (at the expense of easy communications of information). I agree with some of the other reviewers that some examples showed projects that lacked easy usability / readability (i.e. for a calendar / schedule) - if the goal was communications of information without having to spend time deciphering the layout of the information then they fell short IMHO).
It is possible that this book might prove a useful reference for me for design ideas but I am not sure of that at this time.

this book is absolutely agreeable. It hits everything a graphic designer should know, and more.
couldn't say enough good things about it, so I'll just say buy it or borrow it from a friend, you wont put it down.

This book is just great! It has tons of different grid systems (but common and not common), and it's a great inspiration for graphic designers.
I bought it after I read some recommendations about it and it's been worth buying it although I'm not sure if it would be your best shot if you are a web designer... but if you are a graphic/print designer you definitively need to have it!
I'd say it's great to get this one as well as Josef Muller-Brockmann's Grid Systems in Graphic Design (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/3721201450).
